The Pope excommunicated the mafia the
most powerful crime group in the world, disregarding the repercussions. In
unplanned remarks to people at a mass in Southern Italy,
Pope Francis said “the mafia is the example of the adoration of evil and
contempt of the common good. Those who in their lives follow the path of evil
as mafiosi do, are not in communion with God. They are excommunicated”. It is
the most severe condemnation of the mafia by the Pope for two decades. In 1993,
then Pope John Paul blasted the Sicilian mafia when he visited the area after a
spate of murders. In retaliation numerous churches were bombed by the mafia. By
the daring remarks of the Pontiff, the church had broken an unwritten handoff
rule towards crime. The members of the mafia used to attend church ceremonies,
many see themselves as religious.
This must be an eye-opener to those at
the helm of affairs of numerous church
denominations in Kerala, leave alone the Catholic church. The bishops and high priests of Kerala always hobnob with
the rich, the mighty and the corrupt politicians giving credence to their
image. By this veiled endorsement of the corrupt the church help them thrive in
their respective areas. The church accept donations and charity from those who
have amassed wealth through nefarious
means and dons of abkari mafia. Their sons and daughters easily get admission
in the educational institutions run by the church. The doors of the bishop’s
palaces are always open to the politicians and the mighty, who dine with the
shepherds before leaving the diocesan
headquarters.
The role played by the church in the
movement against Madhav Gadgil report was reactionary and illegal. The
inflammatory speech by the bishop of
Thmarassery was against the rule
of law. The burning of the forest office happened after this speech. The
Government of Kerala failed to act against him fearing his wrath may bring doom
to their parties in the elections.
Bishops of Kerala, kindly see what
the Pope is doing. Stop fighting over trivialities. Let your actions be
eco-friendly and for the good of the common man. Denounce the corrupt and filthy, distance yourselves from the dark forces of the society.
